This summer, The Resurrection Project's exceptional Financial Services program was awarded the 2009 Family Strengthening Award from the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).

The Financial Services program involves twelve staff at four different sites providing families with assistance that includes foreclosure prevention, budget and credit counseling, and information on buying a home for the first time. Programs include workshops, one-on-one counseling, and
This award, presented in partnership with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, was given to three outstanding community-based organizations whose programs have made a measurable impact in strengthening Latino families.
To share best practices with other agencies nationwide, staff from nine different NCLR affiliate organizations converged in Pilsen last week for a comprehensive two-day workshop showcasing TRP’s efforts. While the focus of the training was best practices in Financial Services, attendees also spent hands-on time learning about other TRP initiatives that intersect with Financial Services, including real estate development and property management, as well as presentations around fundraising, sustainability and planning for the future. Thursday included a tour of Pilsen and reception at a neighborhood favorite, Fogata Village Restaurant in Pilsen.
Agencies learn from each other at the September training
“The workshop was an incredible learning experience for everyone involved,” says TRP’s Kristen Komara, Director of Financial Services. “We were able to share our tools for success with individuals from cities as far away as San Francisco, San Diego, and Nashville, and we had a dozen staff involved at different levels throughout the workshop.
"Opportunities like this to dialogue with other agencies and provide this type of technical assistance are how all of us continue to learn from one another and improve the way we serve families across the United States.”
