Instituto del Progreso Latino Offering Free Workshops

Karla Cruz
Published: November 5, 2009

In an effort to better serve our community, Instituto del Progreso Latino is offering a series of free workshops ranging in topic. Currently there are no set times for these workshops: Instituto will try to work around  participant's schedules as much as possible. These workshops can be given in both English and Spanish. More than anything we want to provide important information in a fun and interactive way.

If you or anyone you know is interested in participating in workshops on these topics, please send an email with your information and availability to me, Karla Cruz: k.cruz@idpl.org

Mente Sana en Cuerpo Sano

(focused on health and nutrition)

Mente Sana en Cuerpo Sano is a 10-week program designed to improve the nutritional knowledge in the community. The workshops are one-hour long and will cover healthier alternatives to popular recipes within the communities. We will also cover ways to become a better grocery shopper, important information regarding fiber, calcium, and the myths about "whole grains." Finally, we will try to educate participants about ways they can prevent diseases that are common in our community, such as diabetes. We are not yet offering this workshop and are looking to begin as soon as we find participants. Times and days for this workshop as well as the following will be determined by the amount of confirmed participants.

Parents as Partners

(For parents of pre-school and grammar school kids)

PAP gives a general overview of the way children learn from Pre K to the high school level. It covers activities that can help parents bond and become involved in their child's education. We also go on educational field trips, including to local libraries, so that parents can become aware of resources available within the community. The PAP program is a 10-13 week commitment. We are currently in the 4th week but new participants are encouraged to come. We meet at St. Michaels, 2325 W. 24th Pl, every Thursday for one hour. Workshops take place at 4:30, 6:30 and 7:30. Children are part of most activities.

Pathway to College

(For parents of children in grades 7th to 12th)

Camino a la Universidad is similar to PAP in that it focuses on parent involvement in the education of their sons/daughters. This workshop will focus on the steps necessary to achieve admission to university. We will cover scholarships, financial aid, the application process and requirements, and the differences between community college and university.

Instituto del Progreso Latino is a recognized leading city and state educational center serving more than 14,000 participants annually to advance their basic academic skills, obtain a high school diploma, pass the GED exam, become U.S. citizens, increase their job skills, and provide assistance with employment opportunities. Our goal is to instill that sense of hope, motivate perseverance, and provide the tools for success.
