Dia De los Muertos

Published: October 23, 2009

As a predominately Latino and Mexican community, Pilsen will be celebrating Dia De los Muertos this year at various locations.  The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States. It consists of gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember and honor friends and family that have passed away.

The celebration occurs late in October and early in November in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints Day, which occurs on November 1st and All Souls day, which occurs on November 2nd. Traditions include building altars that honor the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed.

Many celebrations will be taking part in the Pilsen community beginning October 30.  Here are a couple of them: Rockotitlan at Casa Michoacan, Pros Arts Studio at Casa Atzlan.

Rockotitlan will be hosting their first event at Casa Michoacan.  They have been around for a couple of years promoting cultural events in Pilsen and throughout Chicago.  Rockotitlan is a collective of artists that promote Mexican culture and arts.  They will have live music that is representative of the southern parts of Mexico.  There will also be visual artists, artisans will be selling clothing and other artifacts themed around the day of the dead and traditional southern Mexico apparel.

There will be art on display and other art related activities.  Also included, Pros Arts Studio will be having face-painting for kids and adults on Nov. 2nd at Dvorak Park, 1119 W. Cullerton (4pm to 7pm).  For over 20  years, Pros Arts Studio has been promoting art and art related activities for kids in the Pilsen community.
