Pilsen was bustling with hungry visitors and residents on Sept. 16 as they celebrated Mexican Independence Day at the second annual Buen Provecho! Pilsen. More than 25 local restaurants, cafes and bakeries participated in the restaurant tour, providing visitors with a sample of their delectable dishes.
“We’re thrilled to be able to showcase the variety of businesses that Pilsen has to offer. I can’t imagine a better way to spend Mexican Independence Day than on a walking restaurant tour of our beautiful community,” says Alderman Daniel Solis. “With a large Mexican population in Pilsen, the food is some of the most authentic in the city.”
Buen Provecho! Pilsen is centered along 18th Street in the heart of Pilsen’s commercial district and was open from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Attendees received a routing map guiding them to all the participating restaurants to ensure they had the opportunity to visit every site, and a ticket for entry to each.
“We created this event to showcase Pilsen and give people a chance to sample a variety of dishes in one night,” says David Betlejewski, executive director of Eighteenth Street Development Corporation, the event’s sponsor. Participants were able to try Oaxacan Chocolate-Cinnamon Cookies, Arroz con Leche, Traditional Mexican Bunelos, Little Hotties Chicken Wings with Fried Rice, Quesadillas Raul, Mini Barbeque Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Potato Flautas and much, much more.
Tickets were $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. All proceeds benefit the Eighteenth Street Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the Pilsen community.
