Sellers started arriving at 6:30 in the morning at 18th & Peoria last Sunday for the first Pilsen Community Garage Sale. Nearly all local residents, they brought an array of treasures that included lamps, coffee tables, antiques, children’s toys, knick-knacks, jewelry, t-shirts, jeans, slacks, dresses, women and men’s shoes.
By mid-morning a steady stream of shoppers was stopping by, and happy bargain hunters were carrying off their great finds. This volunteer took advantage of the sale and found a beautiful handmade bead bracelet for $3.50. The sellers were very appreciative when Norma Alanis from the Chicago Community Bank showed up with a tray of free coffee.
Alanis also founded the Pilsen Farmer’s Market, which was also open on Sunday and has become a fixture in Pilsen over the last two years. The sale was organized by the Farmer’s Market with permission from the Alderman’s office and the cooperation of residents who normally park in the vacant lot.
A typical treasure trove

We even got a bit of news buzz when a reporter from Newcity visited and interviewed a young artist who was selling on site portraits of visitors. So we might see an article about the Garage Sale in Newcity.
The artist will be back this Sunday, September 20th with more of her work and drawings for sale. The garage sale will also run on the 27th, for the last day this Fall. If you would like to be a seller, email info@pilsencommunitymarket.org or just show up on Sunday, there’s plenty of room and it’s $15 for the day: 9 -2 pm. Be sure to bring your own table and shade: hat, tent or umbrella!
