Local Gem, Contributing, Inspiring and Sharing

Jaime Guzman
Published: October 28, 2009

As we continue to promote all things Pilsen, we have chosen another community gem to portray. Jaime Garza is the latest profile on my pilsen bio.  He designed the Pilsen logo but has many more things he is very passionate about.

He has been playing music for more than 14 years and has been playing in local bands such as his current projects: Azul de Noche (Spanish blues band), Son Del Viento (Jarocho band) and Benjamin Anaya y los Estraños Unidos (samba fusion). His influences are traditional Mexican music, blues, jazz, rock and samba. He plays many instruments, including the drums and in his bands he plays the bass guitar.

For the Pilsen logo he chose old and recent murals that are up throughout the community, and included a graffiti mural to emphasize the urban context of life in Pilsen, Watch it here.  Jaime grew up on the east side of Pilsen and attended Benito Juarez High School. Music has always been his passion, and picked up graphic design as a means to support himself. He’s a freelance designer having worked for Stamp Graphics (now DOT Press), and Piñata printing. He’s done everything from flyers, posters and political logos.

He started a cultural event-promotion company, Rockotitlan. They hold musical events in Pilsen and throughout Chicago. Rockotitlan is made up of artists, and includes poets, painters and writers, besides musicians. They host events with suggested donations to cover costs and allow a small profit. To learn more about Jaime, check out his facebook.
