Is Growing Station Community Garden in Pilsen Chicagoland’s favorite public place?
Steve V / Metropolitan Planning Council
You can help decide. Between Aug. 9 and Sept. 10, vote online at PlacemakingChicago.com for your favorite of two dozen finalists in the “What Makes Your Place Great? Your Secret Corner of Chicagoland” photo and video contest.
To find the undiscovered places that make Chicagoland great, Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) and Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) called on people to submit a photo or video and written description of their favorite hidden public place in the region to the “What Makes Your Place Great? Your Secret Corner of Chicagoland” contest.
Pilsen's Own
Steve V. submitted a photo of the spot and the following description of why Pilsen values this public place:
“The Growing Station Community Garden in Pilsen at 21st and Sangamon is nearly hidden. But then it's right next to an office building and two apartment mid-rise buildings. A short multi-use trail, seemingly constructed exclusively for garden access, runs right through the garden, and next to an abandoned railroad.
"You might have difficulty finding this just by exploring Pilsen, unless someone tells you the intersection. The first thing you spot is the trail (which has a north and south entrance). From the trailhead, you still can’t see the garden, but the trail and flows invite you to enter. Head towards the other end of the trail, and keep your eyes open: you'll soon see the beehives and raised planter beds full of vegetables.”
