Juarez students seek to share the present with the future

On Thursday the After School Matters and Juarez partnership wrapped up the school year with a celebration that included the displaying of the students’ work, food and entertainment.  The photography program, led by instructor Monica Cruz, had their final projects from this and last year on display.

Last year, the program decided to make their own snowcone cart and decorate it with pictures from the year’s program.  This year, they built a large camera that will serve as a time capsule – to be opened in 10 years.  The camera will house personal time capsules made by individual students and according to Cruz, “they have pictures, love letters and other personal items and it will be on display at the campus’ new addition.”  Juarez High School is poised to open their new Performing Arts Center (building addition) this coming fall.

Students got to show their work and be creative on site.  There was a button-making machine that allowed students to make their own individual button for the day’s festivities.

Cruz considers herself a compulsive image-maker, because her photographs primarily surface from her own daily life.  Often, she refers to her photographs as "trinkets."  Her style is a heavy influence on the students at Juarez, which explains the students' motivation to share their life with future Juarez students.   To learn more about Monica Cruz and her work click here.  For After School Matters click here.
