Summer Links 2012
Community Service Internship Program
Host Site Application (due Feb. 10th, 2012)
What is Summer Links? Summer Links is an intensive 10-week (6/25/12-8/31/12) paid internship program for undergraduate and graduate students of the University of Chicago committed to public service, community building, and social change.
30 students are matched with full-time, paid internships in local non-profit organizations, government institutions, schools, and community-based agencies throughout the Chicago area. Matching takes place through a series of interviews conducted in early April at the host sites. Because there are more host sites than students, not every site is guaranteed an intern.
Prior to their internships, students participate in a one week Orientation (6/18-6/22) addressing social issues in Chicago. For the remaining 10 weeks, Summer Linkers work at their host organizations Monday-Thursday and come together every Wednesday evening and all day Friday for Trainings that include guest speakers, visits to various organizations, community explorations, and group discussions designed to help students become more engaged and effective community builders. Please be aware that because of these Trainings students will not be at their internship sites on Fridays.
How do I become a Summer Links Host Agency?
Your organization must be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, government agency, institution or school.
Your organization must develop a challenging 10-week work plan (6/25/12-8/30/12) for a University of Chicago student. All work plans must have clearly defined objectives and outcomes with flexibility to allow students to participate in mandatory Summer Links Trainings every Friday. Internship work must primarily benefit a community. The work cannot involve partisan or non-partisan political activity, fundraising, or lobbying on the federal, state, or local level.
Your organization must complete a written application describing the plan and the skills required of a student working on those objectives. Your organization must identify an individual within the organization who will directly supervise the student throughout the summer. The intern’s immediate supervisor must be available to interview students during the matching process (3/26/12-4/6/12). Strong supervision and mentorship is a key factor in the selection of host sites.
Your organization will be asked to contribute $900 to the stipend received by your student intern (students earn $4000 for the summer), due August 31st, 2012. Written approval of your organization’s involvement in the Summer Links program from your Executive Director, Board Chair, or Principal will be requested.
If your organization is unable to contribute the $900, please contact Summer Links Program Director Trudi Langendorf at trudi@uchicago.edu or 773-834-2699 to discuss the details of your circumstances.
Summer Links is a UCSC program funded by the Office of the Dean of the College
